How many hip-hop albums do you know of that were done in a month? Okay, one, two maybe three. But how many in Zimbabwe can be as thorough as the masterpiece I’ve been listening to for some weeks. Le Lux Opal Royale, a Sp3kktrumn production.
“Oh yeah, LLOR means Le Lux Opal Royal translated as The Royal Light Opal. Opal is the birthstone of October, the month I was born in. The Royale aspect stems from my ancestry, being a Rozvi descendent.”
The project features various artistes including me. I did a small speech on the intro. T-Gonz, Navy Seal, Cashbid, Anna T.D Gowera, Kush, Ashton, Sharky, Levonte (The Late) and Kidd Active. The producers who provided beats were Robbie Anthem, 4uxion, Hitmen, Fun F and Terry Potter. DJ Krimz Beats of the Boyz Remukute fame, mixed and mastered the project.
Yes this is the same Sp3kktrumn who represents the Zim Son Clothing line, blogs, graphic designs and also raps. He is such an Octopus in these arts and he works hard.
That’s why I wasn’t going to rush through a review. His material in this one is concrete and evergreen. So even a review in 2018, maybe in The Guardian, will be much appreciated.
So much factionalism in Zim Hip-hop but this individual see’s no borders. He collaborated with many artistes in this projects because he always wants his projects to be collective effort. A family business. My favourite song is definitely Can’t Handle It. It is a love vibe which Sp3kktrumn expected to only please the one he wrote for, he has revealed. Expensive Time is another jam that went in for me. Cashbid is a beast indeed, and he knows how to tell his stories. The poetic voice of Anna beautifully woven into the beat made it something else. This was my first time hearing Anna take her poetry to another level.
Say Grace was about his late parents. As I said Le Lux Opal Royale is more of a personal album. It is sentimental to Sp3kktrumn. You will realize it was also a tribute to Levonte, who lost his life in 2013. He was very close to the artiste and they led the group Se Vanquish with which they did a lot of tracks. He lives on in this project and Sp3kk has honoured him much through his mixtapes .
“The Theme is basically an autobiography of Sp3kktrumn. LLOR was actually conceived the day I realized I was graduating a day after my birthday.”
