Review: “What’s hip-hop without me” Cal_Vin says in “Bona”

Bulawayo’s new school king, Cal_Vin threatens to take over city to city in his “Bona” lyrics. Bona is a new track from “dat Luveveboy”. He switches his flow with a mixture of English and Ndebele and makes his presence in the game known.

“Bona” can be translated as “Watch This Space”, so this is definitely a braggadocio track where the rapper flaunts his successes and warns of more exploits. The Africa’s top 20 list, the girls that are trying to take him away from his girl, doing great without a large twitter following and  many other brag-bars. The Ndebele rap king highlights that he took Luveve by storm, reigned in the capital city and finally even reached Jo Burg. Cal_Vin did a stellar remix of Z’khupani this year with South Africa’s new school king Cassper Nyovest. The 2 C’s have made waves in their respective countries and of course Cal_Vin will use this to his advantage to piss of his enemies.

His message here is basically, that he is coming to take over your territory if you listen closely. Nominated last year at the Zimbabwe Hip-hop awards Cal_vin asserts that he wants  it all, a NAMA Award, ZIMA and even the Zim Hip-hop awards among other accolades a rapper can get. The self proclaimed new school leader says , “What is hip-hop without me” and adds that he gave hope to the ghetto through his success. Made them see that it was possible.

I personally like the song. He certainly has done the average thing he flaunts though some issues depend on opinion. Victory is certain if he maintains the pace at which he has been making music and branding himself as an artiste other artistes argue about in groups. It is rare for a Bulawayo artiste to be all the places he has been.

I like the fact that he has never blamed tribalism for set backs but is rather an artiste who really wants to put in work. Met the rapper at HWMiT in the month of May and we shared a few opinions with him and Yagi Dojo, before he went to Simba Tagz’s studio. I am not sure what his business was there but my point is he invested in a visit.
