Today is Africa Day, a special day to commemorate the Unity of African Nations and also one of my closest friends’ Birthday, Patrick Chiwara. I know he is an Africanist and will certainly need something new to add to his playlist so this review is in honour of the day and also my friend. I managed to get a hold of a jam titled “Nyarara Zimbabwe” by General Waspy, a Kwekwe based dancehall artiste. The songs production is done by Jae Mac under all star Africa.
The producer who is mostly known for producing Hip-hop and RnB didn’t disappoint on the mixing and mastering of this didactic track. The vocals of the artiste married the vocals to send a consoling message to Xenophobia victims and other Zimbabwean nationals going through hardships in foreign lands.
The song comes at a time when South Africa experienced Xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals from the region. It is of course sad that this is the song I decided to dedicate to this day but then again we can’t lie that everything is alright. Africa needs to be healed by this music. Music and all art have the power to influence the minds of people. Xenophobia is not the violence, it is the state of mind.
If one is hateful of another tribe even with no act of violence, that’s already Xenophobia. The consciousness inflicted by the song Nyarara Zimbabwe is not to be undermined or slept on because it is more important than most messages we share across social media. Not that we should always hold serious faces and drown in our tears but it is necessary to rise and realize the horror in our midst. Let’s change the mindset of the populous together.
I consider Jae Mac, General Waspy and All Star Africa to be all soldiers in this mind battle we are faced with. With no further adieu or shenanigans from me I present to you the download link and streamingfrom soundcloud.
